    Electrooptic Modulation in Thin Film Barium Titanate Plasmonic Interferometers

    We demonstrate control of the surface plasmon polariton wavevector in an active metal−dielectric plasmonic interferometer by utilizing electrooptic barium titanate as the dielectric layer. Arrays of subwavelength interferometers were fabricated from pairs of parallel slits milled in silver on barium titanate thin films. Plasmon-mediated transmission of incident light through the subwavelength slits is modulated by an external voltage applied across the barium titanate thin film. Transmitted light modulation is ascribed to two effects, electrically induced domain switching and electrooptic modulation of the barium titanate index

    Clear detection of dusty torus signatures in a Weak-Line Radio Galaxy: the case of PKS 0043-42

    We report the clearest detection to date of dusty torus signatures in a Weak-Line Radio Galaxy (WLRG). The deep Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) rest-frame mid-infrared (MIR) spectrum of the WLRG PKS 0043-42 (z=0.116) shows a clear spectral turnover at wavelengths longer than ~20 micron suggestive of warm dust, as well as a 9.7 micron silicate absorption feature. In addition, the hard X-ray results, based on Chandra data, strongly support a picture in which PKS 0043-42 has a torus and accretion disc more typical of Strong-Line Radio Galaxies (SLRGs). The MIR and X-ray spectra are markedly different from those of other WLRGs at similar redshifts, and here we show that the former can be successfully fitted with clumpy torus models with parameters characteristic of Type-2 AGN tori: close to edge-on (i=74 deg) and relatively broad (torus angular width=60 deg), with an outer radius of 2 pc, hydrogen column density ~1.6x10^(23) cm^(-2), and AGN bolometric luminosity ~1.6x10^(44) erg s^(-1). The presence of a compact torus in PKS 0043-42 provides evidence that this WLRG is fuelled by cold, rather than hot, gas accretion. We suggest that WLRGs are a diverse population, and PKS 0043-42 may represent a type of radio galaxy in which the AGN activity has been recently re-triggered as a consequence of intermittent gas supply, or in which the covering factor of the Narrow-Line Region (NLR) clouds is relatively low.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 1 table.     X-ray absorption tomography employing a conical shell beam

    We demonstrate depth-resolved absorption imaging by scanning an object through a conical shell of X-rays. We measure ring shaped projections and apply tomosynthesis to extract optical sections at different axial focal plane positions. Three-dimensional objects have been imaged to validate our theoretical treatment. The novel principle of our method is scalable with respect to both scan size and X-ray energy. A driver for this work is to complement previously reported methods concerning the measurement of diffracted X-rays for structural analysis. The prospect of employing conical shell beams to combine both absorption and diffraction modalities would provide enhanced analytical utility and has many potential applications in security screening, process control and diagnostic imaging

    Study of orientation effect on nanoscale polarization in BaTiO3 thin films using piezoresponse force microscopy

    We have investigated the effect of texture on in-plane (IPP) and out- of plane (OPP) polarizations of pulsed-laser-deposited BaTiO3 thin films grown on Pt and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) buffered Pt electrodes. The OPP and IPP polarizations were observed by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) for three-dimensional polarization analyses in conjunction with conventional diffraction methods using x-ray diffraction and reflection high energy electron diffraction measurements. BaTiO3 films grown on Pt electrodes exhibited highly (101) preferred orientation with higher IPP component whereas BaTiO3 film grown on LSCO/Pt electrodes showed (001) and (101) orientations with higher OPP component. Measured effective d(33) values of BaTiO3 films deposited on Pt and LSCO/ Pt electrodes were 14.3 and 54.0 pm/ V, respectively. Local piezoelectric strain loops obtained by OPP and IPP-PFM showed that piezoelectric properties were strongly related to film orientation

    Beyond and beneath the hierarchical market economy: global production and working-class conflict in Argentina's automobile industry

    This paper argues that the hierarchical market economy (HME) category does not provide an adequate starting point for addressing capitalist diversity in Latin America. Building from a critical perspective on the global commodity chain (GCC) and global production network (GPN) approaches, it instead considers the impact of firms’ transnational relations and the often neglected role of working-class struggles. It will argue that capitalist diversity can only be understood at the nexus of these ostensibly global and local phenomena; and by specifying the strategic decisions taken by firms in Argentina’s automobile industry, it will account for the failure of that sector. Finally, it examines the role of working-class struggles in the industry in Córdoba, Argentina, arguing that these were vital in shaping the specific and unstable form of capitalist diversity in Argentina, as well as potential alternatives to it

    A Phase Diagram of Low Temperature Epitaxial Silicon Grown by Hot-wire Chemical Vapor Deposition for Photovoltaic Devices

    We have investigated the low-temperature epitaxial growth of thin silicon films by hot-wire chemical vapor deposition (HWCVD). Using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have found conditions for epitaxial growth at low temperatures achieving twinned epitaxial growth up to 6.8 µm on Si(100) substrates at a substrate temperature of 230°C. This opens the possibility of growing high quality films on low cost substrates. The H_2:SiH_4 dilution ratio was set to 50:1 for all growths. Consistent with previous results, the epitaxial thickness is found to decrease with an increase in the substrate temperature
